When you’re not on the open road with your RV, camper or trailer, it’s important to ensure it’s safe and stored properly so you’re ready for your next adventure. RV storage is a popular option for many people because of limited space at home or restrictions against large-vehicle storage by cities and homeowner’s associations.
You’re ready to store your RV. What’s next?
Here’s a quick checklist when keeping your RV in storage:
- Remove all valuables
- Drain water tanks and clear water lines
- Fill up fuel tank (if leaving for longer than a few months, drain it)
- Clean the vehicle thoroughly inside and out
- Leave the refrigerator door propped open
- Find a secure RV storage location
Preparing the Interior of Your RV & Protecting Against Pests
A thorough cleaning of the inside of your RV and removal of all food is the first step to ensure unwanted guests don’t camp out.
Not to sound like your mother, but “are you sure it’s clean?” Wipe down every and all surfaces, countertops, tabletops, cabinets, bathrooms and floors. Clean the refrigerator and freezer and leave the doors open for ventilation and to prevent mold. It is also smart to leave drawers and cabinet doors slightly open to prevent odors. Wipe out the oven and microwave. Sweep and/or vacuum all floors.
In addition to your cleaning, think of all places insects or rodents could enter and make it harder for them. Cover vents and filters. Check the undercarriage of your RV for loose panels or any gaps and cover as needed prior to storage.
It is also important to drain all water from your storage tanks and water lines. Most people choose to add a non-toxic RV antifreeze to keep the pipes from freezing.
Finally, when going through your interior prep checklist, unplug or remove the batteries from small appliances and shut off the main breaker and LP gas supply valve.
Keeping it Dry and Other Exterior Prep
If your RV has ever had moisture or mold damage, you know that’s not something you want to deal with again and want to prevent it as best as possible. The two keys to this while in storage are good seals and ventilation.
Check all exterior seams and rubber seals for cracks and repair as necessary. Minimize the chance for leaks around slide-outs by retracting them. Also, if you don’t already have them, you should install roof vent covers. These allow air to flow freely while keeping out the elements and pests.
Also, when parking outdoors, to maximize the life of your tires, you should place wood or plastic beneath them to make sure they’re not touching the ground. It will prevent the rubber from aging and cracking.
Finding an RV Storage Location
Security is key when selecting an RV storage location. RVs can be a target for thieves because of expensive electronic equipment within them.
When searching for a location, be sure to visit the site, look for and ask about security cameras, controlled access, and accessibility.
